Arctic Explorers

We are exploring the race to the Pole, mostly focusing on Robert Falcon Scott but also discussing Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton. Any knowledge or discussions you could have around the subject at home would be hugely beneficial as this will also be used in the children's literacy work. Thank you and Bon Voyages!

Never judge a book by its cover!

We chose some books that we thought others may enjoy and wrapped them up ready for our new library display. Library users can take a gamble by trying out an unknown book, basing their choices of some thoughtful bullet points, key word hashtags and the first line of the book!

Mastering place value multiplication and division

Today we consolidated our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10/100/1000, including decimals. Some of us used digit cards and created our own "mini place value sliders", some of us moved on to recreating this as a written method in our books whilst others had their understanding extended by grappling with problems solving.

Survival Signals.

Today in year 6 we have been tying knots and creating DIY emergency signals as part of our explorers topic. The children foraged around for plant debris and created a huge 'X' which would've easily been spotted from above. Don't worry, we cleared up afterwards - we don't want a rescue brigade landing on our playground!

And of course... The traditional 'dab' photo had to make it to the blog...

SOS!!!

Just in case we find ourselves stranded away from civilization, we also learnt how to signal for help. The international sign for rescue (the triangle), the sign for help (a "V") and medical assistance (an "X") - all using our bodies or natural resources.

GET KNOTTED

To improve our chances of survival in deepest, darkest Shaftesbury, Apple and Juniper explorers learnt about and perfected their knot tying skills.

EXTRA EXTRA

Seeing as both Year 4 and Year 6 had been working on journalistic writing, we enjoyed sharing our articles together.
