White Light!

We found out today that white light is made up of all the different colours of the spectrum. We explored this further by creating our own disappearing colour wheels.

Life in the trenches

Today Year Six experienced a little of what life was like in the World War One trenches. The children were marched down the corridors in strict silence then rushed into their "trenches" amidst gunfire and other warfare sound effects. Children then learnt about food, sleep, living conditions and many other areas of life in the trenches. They endured their biscuit ration (cracker biscuits - not nearly as bad as the original awful hard biscuits) and were let off eating the dreaded tinned Maconochie meat and gravy! Luckily, a care package did arrive on the front line and we were all fortunate enough to savour a single piece of chocolate...what luxury!

Next week are going to be writing our own diaries from the front line trenches so any discussions you can have with the children about their experiences and what they have learnt would be immensely helpful. - Thank you....Mrs J

Diaries

We have been reading a variety of diary extracts to better understand the features of a diary. So far we have looked at the diary of an arctic explorer, Samuel Pepys, an evacuee's diary and an extract from Anne Frank's diary (which the children were particularly interested in). If you have any diary extracts at home that you can discuss with your child, that would be fantastic.

The wonders of the eye

Today we investigated how the eye works. We learnt about the scientific names for the parts of the eye and looked at our partner's eyes to see the pupils dilate and contract.

Roald Dahl inspiration

Having read the "lost chapter" from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory today and learnt about the giant fudge mountain and wagon tracks, Year Six started designing their own rooms for the factory. We had a machine that swapped flavours so bananas tasted like toffee and apples like chocolate; we had marshmallow soft play areas with chocolate flake and strawberry laces rope swings; we had an entirely edible football pitch with white chocolate lines and we even had an edible educational supplier cupboard! The new Year Six certainly are NOT short on imagination!

Rights Respecting

Apple class were wonderfully mature today in our discussions around the UN Rights for Children which was followed by some really good suggestions for our own class charter. We are looking forward to using our charter to ensure our classroom is a happy, safe place for our learning this year.

First Day Engineering Challenge

Year Six certainly rose to the challenge and thought outside the box today. The task was to create a way of suspending cotton balls off the floor using only: a small length of string; 10 cocktail sticks; 10 elastic bands and 5 straws. We had some very creative designs given the short amount of planning time we allowed them. Engineers of the the Future!
